Cooperatives of Southern African weavers create vivid tapestries by preparing the raw material to be used in finished pieces. Women artisans in rural African villages shear the sheep, wash the wool, spin the wool, and then—using dyes made from wild berries and flowers—dye the wool into vibrant colors. An artist creates an image that depicts village life. The drawing is placed at the back of a wall loom to be used as a pattern guide for a completed tapestry. The women artisans sit on the floor and weave from the wall loom, replicating the image of their village. |
